About Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is a world-renowned barrier island known for its stunning natural beauty and bountiful recreational offerings. The island is celebrated for its miles of soft, sandy beaches framed by gentle dunes, bathed year-round by the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its extensive, well-maintained coastline, luxurious resort communities, and world-class golf courses have been driving tourism since the early 1980's.

In 1950, Hilton Head Island underwent a transformation when retired Major General Joseph Fraser and three investor families acquired 20,000 acres for a lumber project in Savannah. However, Joseph's son Charles, with a background in land management from Yale, persuaded his father to set aside 5,000 acres for a nature-integrated development. This led to The Sea Pines Resort, characterized by structures harmonizing with nature, forest green aesthetics, and a commitment to environmental preservation. In 1960, the resort established Hilton Head Island's first golf course, attracting national attention. The 1969 Heritage Golf Tournament, won by Arnold Palmer, marked the rise of this high-end resort and eco-conscious retirement community. The televised 1974 Heritage Golf Tournament boosted real estate sales, with tourism revenue surpassing real estate by the early 1980s.

The island is a renowned destination for golf enthusiasts, with a wide range of championship golf courses designed by some of the greatest architects in Golf. These courses offer breathtaking views of the island's natural beauty and waterways, making golf here a truly unforgettable experience. Hilton Head Island's food scene is characterized by a mix of Lowcountry cuisine and international flavors. Restaurants offer fresh seafood, locally sourced ingredients, and a variety of dining experiences, from waterfront seafood shacks to upscale fine dining establishments.

In addition to its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, Hilton Head Island hosts a range of cultural events, including art exhibitions, music festivals, and theatrical performances. The island's community values the arts and actively supports cultural endeavors throughout the year. Hilton Head Island's relaxed atmosphere, combined with its upscale amenities and stunning surroundings, makes it a sought-after destination for travelers seeking a balance of luxury and natural beauty. Whether you're here to unwind on the beach, enjoy outdoor adventures, or savor exquisite cuisine, Hilton Head Island offers a memorable and diverse experience for all who visit, especially those who remember to pack their clubs.
