The Golf Club at Indigo Run

The Course

Architects: Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II
Built: 1996

The Golf Club at Indigo Run is a premier 18-hole golf club, celebrated for its elegant fusion of traditional design and innovative elements. Since opening in 1996, it has earned a prestigious spot as one of the nation’s “Top Ten New Private Courses” according to Golf Digest. This acclaim continues to reflect the course's commitment to excellence, featuring a balanced mix of challenges that cater to golfers of all abilities.  Indigo Run exemplifies a classic Jack Nicklaus design, where precision and strategic play take precedence over sheer distance. The course demands careful shot-making and a keen understanding of the layout, rather than relying solely on powerful drives. The fairways are generously wide, offering ample landing areas, while the greens are meticulously protected by strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that come into play on 12 holes.  The design often calls for a precise fade shot from the tee, particularly when approaching from the left side. Success on this course hinges on finesse, touch, and imaginative play, making it a rewarding challenge for those who embrace its nuances.   Jack Nicklaus, reflecting on the design, shares, “The Golf Club at Indigo Run is my first co-design with my son Jackie, and our goal was to create the finest golf course on Hilton Head Island. We had no restrictions on resources, and the land at Indigo Run is absolutely stunning. We took great care to preserve the natural environment and the wildlife that thrives here.”   Nicklaus further elaborates, “The course embodies a traditional design, but the combination of our ideas has resulted in something unique. The strategy required and the thoughtful placement of greens make it a challenging and enjoyable venue for both tournament play and everyday rounds. I hope it will be a source of enjoyment for years to come.”

Signature Holes:

  • 4th Hole: This challenging par-3 requires a precise shot over water to a well-protected green. The risk-reward nature of this hole tests accuracy and nerve, making it a memorable part of the course.

  • 13th Hole: A strategic par-4 that doglegs to the right, this hole demands careful placement off the tee to set up a favorable approach shot to a green that is well-guarded by hazards. The layout rewards thoughtful shot selection and strategic play.

The Golf Club at Indigo Run continues to be a testament to Jack Nicklaus’s design philosophy, blending traditional elements with innovative touches to create a course that is both challenging and rewarding for all who play it.
