The Courses at Palmetto Hall

The Hills and The Cupp

Arthur Hills Course

Architect: Arthur Hills
Built: 1991

The Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall is celebrated for its architectural design and its ability to challenge golfers with strategic shot-making opportunities. Designed by the renowned architect Arthur Hills, this course is a reflection of the rolling hill-style layouts that gained popularity in the late 1980s and 1990s, with fairways and greens framed by mounding that adds depth and visual appeal to the course.  One of the standout features of the Arthur Hills Course is the presence of towering pine and oak trees that line the fairways. These majestic trees not only enhance the course's aesthetic appeal but also serve as strategic obstacles that require precise tee and approach shots. The overhanging branches create narrow corridors that challenge golfers to carefully consider their shot placement, making accuracy essential to avoid hazards.  The course offers a diverse range of holes, each presenting its own unique set of strategic challenges and opportunities. The layout includes a mix of long and short holes, doglegs, and strategically placed bunkers that test a golfer's ability to plan and execute shots. The course is known for its undulating fairways and large, challenging greens that require a deft touch with the putter.

Signature Hole – Hole 18, Par 4: The 18th hole of the Arthur Hills Course is widely regarded as its signature hole. This challenging par-4 requires a precise tee shot to avoid the mounding and trees that frame the fairway. The approach shot is equally demanding, as the green is guarded by a large, deep bunker on the left and a water hazard on the right. The green itself is multi-tiered, requiring careful consideration of pin placement to avoid a difficult putt. The 18th hole is a fitting conclusion to a round on this meticulously designed course, offering a perfect blend of challenge and beauty.

Robert Cupp Course

Architects: Robert Cupp and David Johnson
Built: 1993

The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall stands in stark contrast to its Arthur Hills counterpart, offering a unique and innovative design that is both visually striking and strategically challenging. Designed by Robert Cupp, this course is known for its geometry-influenced layout, which incorporates sharp angles and straight lines—features that are rarely seen in traditional golf course design.  The layout features straight lines and sharp angles that create a striking visual contrast with the natural landscape of the Lowcountry. This innovative design approach adds an extra layer of strategic depth to the course, as golfers must carefully navigate the sharp angles and consider the geometry of each hole when planning their shots..  The Robert Cupp Course was designed to be accessible to golfers of all skill levels, featuring generous fairways that provide ample room for tee shots. However, the course is by no means easy, as it incorporates a variety of strategic water hazards and bunkers that challenge players to think carefully about their shot selection. The bunkers are particularly noteworthy, with sharp-angled edges and steep slopes that demand precision to avoid. These hazards are not only challenging but also contribute to the course’s overall aesthetic, adding a unique visual element to each hole.

Signature Hole – Hole 7, Par 3: The 7th hole is perhaps the most iconic on the Robert Cupp Course, showcasing the geometric design in full effect. This par-3 features a green that is almost perfectly square, framed by sharp-edged bunkers that create a stark visual contrast. The hole plays over a water hazard, with the green positioned at a slight angle to the tee, making distance control and accuracy essential. The unique design of this hole makes it a memorable challenge and a highlight of any round at Palmetto Hall.
