Hilton Head Island’s only par-70 public golf course, the George Fazio course at Palmetto Dunes is one of the island’s most distinctive and challenging layouts. Many golfers regard it as the most challenging public course on Hilton Head Island, but don’t let that intimidate you. It is designed to be a true but fair test for golfers of all skill levels. One of the youngest golf courses to be featured on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Best, it was also recently named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association. The course features only two par 5s, and the heart of the course lies in a series of long par 4s, beginning with the 432-yard first hole and ending with the 462- yard 18th. With new, state-of-the-art Diamond Zoysia greens, the Fazio Course delivers a peak golf experience players are sure to remember. While it may pose a challenge, the course is accommodating to those who fade or slice, as most out-of-bounds and troublesome areas off the tee are situated on the left side, away from the typical slicer’s trajectory. Players will face many obstacles here, including large bunkers, looming trees, angled water hazards, and intricate green shapes.

The Jones

7 Trent Jones Lane, Hilton Head Island
843-686-9137

The shifting winds make every hole play differently on the top-rated Jones course, providing both challenges and rewards for players of every skill level. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the 1960s, the Jones course was the first of the three to open at Palmetto Dunes Resort. The original layout is also the most forgiving of the three from tee to green, with wide fairways and large greens that have gentle slopes. Though most holes play inland, winding through lagoons and palmetto trees, the par-5 10th plays directly toward the Atlantic Ocean, with the green set against the beach. As the course progresses toward the back nine, the picturesque waterway that meanders through the landscape becomes a prominent feature on nearly every hole. While houses dot the course, they are situated well back from the fairways, ensuring they never dominate the view. Accurate drives at the Robert Trent Jones Course are pivotal in setting up favorable approaches. While the fairways exhibit more contours than other Hilton Head courses, the undulations are still quite manageable, often providing a level lie. Similarly, the rough at Palmetto Dunes, while thick, is not excessively punitive. The greens on this course are generously sized, presenting inviting targets, but they are often well-guarded by an array of bunkers, which are the primary threat to your score here. These sizable, amoeba-shaped traps are voracious, eagerly swallowing wayward approaches. The Palmetto Dunes Robert Trent Jones Course offers golfers a wide range of yardage options. The gold tees extend just over 7,000 yards, while the red tees provide a challenge at just under 5,000 yards. Additionally, a set of black tees at 2,625 yards is suitable for juniors or those seeking an executive course experience.

The TopTracer Range at Palmetto Dunes: Jones Course

Palmetto Dunes Resort becomes the first resort on Hilton Head Island and in the entire southeast to introduce Toptracer technology. This high-tech golf driving range allows guests to compete against friends, play virtual courses, and receive instant shot feedback. The Toptracer range technology is accessible to all and not just limited to those who are about to start playing a round. This technology provides options such as simulated golf, Topgolf-style games, and game data collection. By utilizing the Toptracer app, users can conveniently save their sessions. Rather than focusing on the green, the Toptracer range stands out as a practice facility. Players can elevate their warm-up by measuring the distance of each shot using Toptracer technology. This level of precision provides tour-level insights, which can be especially advantageous for tourists acclimating to different elevations when determining the right club for their shots.

The Hills

2 Leamington Lane, Hilton Head Island

Arthur Hills took full advantage of the Lowcountry’s dramatic coastal beauty when he designed this award-winning course at Palmetto Dunes. Tucked within the serene enclave of Leamington, this shot-makers favorite offers continuous lines of dunes, a rolling layout, numerous water hazards, and thick stands of palmettos. The Arthur Hills course at Palmetto Dunes has long been regarded as one of South Carolina’s most unique golf layouts. A testament to its enduring quality and popularity, this Hilton Head Island gem was named among the “Top 30 Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina.” The Arthur Hills course emphasizes accuracy and precision over distance, providing formidable challenges at every turn. For precision play and natural beauty, this layout simply can’t be beaten. It offers off-balance lies and ocean breezes as well as an extensive network of lagoons winding through 10 different holes. The picture- perfect setting of this course stands apart as a time-honored favorite with golfers and attracts dozens of species of birds as well as alligators and deer. In addition, the course is home to one of the Lowcountry’s most historic lighthouses, the Hilton Head Range Light Station, which guided ships into Port Royal Sound beginning in the late 1800’s.
