This Gary Player masterpiece opened in 1974 becoming the first golf course built within Hilton Head Plantation. The course plays short on the front nine but opens up on the backside, putting an emphasis on hitting fairways and greens. Dolphin Head was renovated in 2010 under the guidance of Clyde Johnston, with the tees and fairways utilizing Celebration Bermuda, while the greens are Mini-Verde Bermuda. Gary Player’s primary aim in designing the golf course was to preserve as many natural features as possible, using minimal landfill to maintain a harmonious balance between man and nature. The result is a picturesque and playable course cherished by the local community. Dolphin Head features two distinctive nines: The front nine winds through tall trees with Player’s signature bunkers and marshland challenges, emphasizing accuracy over length while the back nine offers a contrasting experience with open spaces and towering old-growth trees. The signature par-3 12th hole offers stunning Port Royal Sound views and a challenging water-guarded green. In addition to the golf experience, Dolphin Head Golf Club offers excellent facilities, including a clubhouse, pro shop, and practice areas. This unique course, Gary Player’s first in the Hilton Head area, opened in 1974 and remains a beloved Hilton Head Plantation gem. With water hazards on 13 holes and undulating greens, the course offers an enjoyable challenge. Dolphin Head Golf Club’s commitment to preserving nature and continuous improvements make it a standout in the Lowcountry golf scene. Dolphin Head is semi-private and open to the public with memberships available.
