The History

In bygone eras, this majestic 3,000-acre island was a favored haven for explorers of the world and a secluded refuge for treasure-hunting pirates who sailed the high seas, preying on vessels of all nations. Due to its reputation as a sanctuary for pirates, tales of buried treasure on the island persist to this day. Fripp Island’s history can be traced back to the 17th century when the island was deeded to Captain Johannes Fripp, a formidable privateer who, like other privateers and pirates of that era, combed the seas in search of gold and riches. Captain Fripp, a formidable and imposing figure, gained renown as a skilled seafarer, marking him as a formidable adversary. Remarkably, Fripp Island once encompassed a significantly larger landmass than it does today. However, in 1854, the ocean breached two points on the island, resulting in the formation of three distinct islands: Fripp, Pritchard’s, and Capers. Today, a growing number of travelers, reminiscent of the seafarers of the 17th century, are drawn to this island adorned with palmetto trees, lured by its mild climate. Adorned with tropical foliage, Fripp features a gently sloping beach caressed by invigorating trade winds, breathtaking sunrises over the Atlantic, and the soothing serenade of the surf. These timeless elements have never lost their allure and continue to captivate the senses.

The Courses at Fripp Island

Ocean Point and Ocean Creek

The Ocean Point Course

Architect: George W. Cobb  Built: 1964

Ocean Point Golf Links was the first of the two courses at Fripp Island Resort, opening in 1964. The design is attributed to renowned architect George Cobb. Ocean Point occupies the northernmost tip of Fripp Island and boasts numerous holes that skirt the Atlantic Ocean and the Fripp Inlet. The course affords breathtaking views on the 9th, 10th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 18th holes. The course presents players with small, well-bunkered greens that reward precise iron play. However, recognizing the impact of the coastal winds on this seaside course, Cobb designed it to allow players to run the ball onto most of the greens. Playing Ocean Point Golf Links on a breezy day imparts a newfound appreciation for well-designed links courses and the harmonious interplay between manmade and natural beauty. Ocean Point Golf Links is a cherished jewel at Fripp Island Resort and one of South Carolina's premier golf courses, A recent bold renovation has capitalized on the panoramic vistas, now offering stunning ocean or inlet views on 10 of its 18 holes, with both the front and back nine culminating against the backdrop of the majestic Atlantic Ocean.

The Ocean Creek Course

Architect: Davis Love III Built: 1995

Located at the island's southern extremity, Ocean Creek, Davis Love III’s inaugural signature course, treats golfers to sweeping panoramic views of the Great Salt Marsh and freshwater lakes nestled among four ancient rolling dune lines. Abundant wildlife, including deer, snowy white egrets, great blue herons, and ospreys, often provides a delightful distraction in their natural habitat. Golf Magazine named Ocean Creek “one of the top 10 new courses you can play,” and Golf Digest awarded it a 4.5-star rating. The resort offers daily golf clinics and open tournaments throughout the year. Fripp is a haven for traditionalists who want to grab their bags and walk any time of day.  Wee Links, a course designed for kids, gives youngsters the ability to play alongside their parents, and family and junior instructional programs with affordable rates make it easy for the whole family to learn how to play.
