Riverton Pointe

The Course

Architect: Jack Nicklaus
Built: 2011

Riverton Pointe represents the pinnacle of Nicklaus Design’s commitment to crafting world-class golf courses that seamlessly blend with their natural surroundings. This 18-hole masterpiece showcases the legendary Jack Nicklaus’s signature approach to course design, where every detail is thoughtfully considered to enhance both the challenge and beauty of the game.  From the moment you step onto the first tee, it’s evident that Riverton Pointe is a course that was designed with the utmost respect for the natural landscape. The course features expansive fairways that flow gracefully through groves of tall sea pines and vibrant wildflower meadows, creating a stunning visual contrast against the deep green Paspalum turf. The layout appears as though it has always been a part of the landscape, a testament to Nicklaus’s philosophy of designing courses that work in harmony with their environment. The greens at Riverton Pointe are large, subtle, and beautifully contoured, offering a fair challenge to golfers of all skill levels. These greens demand precise approach shots and thoughtful putting, with subtle breaks and undulations that can easily turn a straightforward putt into a challenging one. The green complexes are designed to reward creativity, allowing players to use the contours to their advantage if they can read them correctly. The fairways   are wide and forgiving, allowing players to take aggressive lines off the tee while still providing strategic challenges. Nicklaus has expertly routed the fairways to flow with the natural topography, utilizing the rolling hills, natural depressions, and gentle slopes to create a layout that is both visually appealing and strategically engaging. Tall sea pines and native grasses border the fairways, framing each hole beautifully and enhancing the sense of seclusion and serenity.

Signature Holes:

  • Hole 4 – Par 5: The 4th hole is a captivating par-5 that exemplifies the strategic brilliance of Nicklaus’s design. The hole begins with a wide fairway that invites a powerful tee shot, but players must navigate a series of bunkers on the right that can catch an errant drive. The fairway then narrows as it approaches a well-protected green, with water guarding the left side and a large bunker on the right. The green is elevated and subtly contoured, making the approach shot particularly challenging. Players who can navigate the hazards and find the correct tier on the green are rewarded with a legitimate birdie opportunity.
  • Hole 9 – Par 4: The 9th hole is a visually stunning par-4 that plays alongside a large lake, offering breathtaking views and a challenging test of accuracy. The hole features a narrow fairway with water running along the left side and a series of bunkers on the right. The approach shot is to a green that juts out into the lake, with water on three sides and a deep bunker guarding the front. The green is large but slopes toward the water, making it crucial to land the ball on the correct side of the hole. The 9th hole is a true test of nerve and precision, and it provides a dramatic finish to the front nine.

  • Hole 13 – Par 3: The 13th hole is a picturesque par-3 that requires a tee shot over a tranquil pond to a green that is surrounded by lush vegetation and tall pines. The green is large and slopes from back to front, with a subtle ridge running through the middle that can make putts particularly tricky. The setting is serene and peaceful, with the natural beauty of the Lowcountry on full display. This hole is a favorite among members for its beauty and challenge, and it’s a perfect example of how Nicklaus integrates the natural environment into his designs.

  • Hole 18 – Par 4: The finishing hole at Riverton Pointe is a challenging par-4 that demands precision and strategic thinking from tee to green. The hole features a dogleg left, with a fairway that narrows as it approaches the green. A series of bunkers line the left side of the fairway, while the right side is protected by a large water hazard. The approach shot is to an elevated green that is well-protected by bunkers and slopes gently from back to front. The 18th hole is a fitting end to the round, combining challenge, beauty, and the need for a well-executed game plan.
