Heron Point

The Course

Architect: Pete Dye
Built: 2007

Heron Point at The Sea Pines Resort is a masterclass in golf course design, crafted by the legendary Pete Dye. The course offers a mix of challenges, where risk-reward scenarios are woven into every hole, demanding strategic thinking and execution. Originally known as the Sea Marsh Golf Course, Heron Point emerged in 2007 after a multimillion-dollar renovation that transformed it into one of Hilton Head's premier golfing destinations.

Pete Dye's creative genius is on full display throughout the course. The fairways are meticulously designed to navigate around various hazards, while Dye’s signature mounding and swales frame the target areas with grace and precision. The result is a course that is both visually stunning and strategically demanding.  The course’s layout features a blend of long and short holes, each presenting its own unique challenges. The constantly shifting elevations and intriguing angles of the fairways keep players on their toes, requiring thoughtful shot placement and a solid game plan. The greens, small and undulating, are a testament to Dye’s creativity, guarded by a variety of obstacles that challenge even the most seasoned golfers.

In 2014, the course underwent further modifications to make it more accessible to the average golfer. These updates included the addition of multiple tee boxes and the enlargement of select greens, allowing for a broader range of pin placements and a more enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. Despite these changes, Heron Point retains its reputation as a formidable test of golf, with tight driving corridors bordered by mature trees, formidable fairway bunkers, and the interplay of water hazards, bulkheads, and unique landscape features like sand, mulch, and limestone surfaces.

One of the defining characteristics of Heron Point is its walkability. The proximity of greens to tees and the generally level terrain make it a delightful course to stroll, allowing golfers to fully appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds them. Heron Point is also a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, showcasing the course's commitment to preserving the natural landscape and wildlife habitat. In recognition of its excellence, Heron Point was honored as South Carolina’s Golf Course of the Year in 2015, joining the ranks of other prestigious courses at Sea Pines Resort, including the famed Harbour Town Golf Links. With seven sets of tees available on each hole, the course accommodates golfers of all abilities, ensuring a challenging yet enjoyable experience for everyone. The availability of caddies and forecaddies adds to the high-end resort experience, providing top-notch service and expertise.

Signature Holes:

  • Hole 9: A sharp dogleg left, this hole requires a well-placed tee shot to set up an approach to a narrow green, guarded by mounds and a bunker. Precision is key on this challenging hole.
  • Hole 16: With mounds and sand defenses protecting the green, this lengthy par-3 is both beautiful and intimidating.
  • Hole 18: The finishing hole is a classic Pete Dye design, with water running along the left side and bunkers and mounds on the right. A well-placed tee shot is crucial to navigating this challenging and visually stunning hole.
